Happy Baby

January 22, 2011

Calvin woke up at 5:30am today, all chirpy and ready to start the day. In fact, he has been pretty chipper for the past few days. When we pick him up from day care, he will give a distress cry when he first sees us, as if saying “I missed you guys!” and when we carry him out of the daycare, he’ll grin happily. He seems to be adapting well to the daycare environment – he’s eating well, sleeping decently and probably playing hard. (He gets to play with bubbles, walk around lots, join the Kindermusic classes…) Perhaps the detailed cheat sheet that I gave them earlier this week helped. He still doesn’t eat the school’s porridge though so I’m preparing his food to bring to school every day.

He’s a really giggly baby now. He will imitate us when we smack our lips together and giggle hard when I come after him smacking my lips. He loves it when we pounce on him or play peekaboo.

I can see his inquisitive mind at work as well when he experiments with shaking his rattle in a certain way to make the sound, drop things to see what sound they make and generally turning everything new around for a thorough inspection.

He’s eating solids well now. His meals are now soft porridge with carrots, sweet potato/pumpkin and some protein like yoghurt (I know it sounds strange….but he likes it) or tofu. Haven’t really given him meat yet, except what’s in those Heinz jar foods that he was eating previously. Now that I’ve gotten the knack of feeding him, this weekend’s feeding was a breeze. His preference it seems is to eat some of the food from my fingers. Maybe he likes to see the mess I make… We’ve also been giving him random food stuff that we are eating because he will look eagerly at us for a share. So today, he had scrambled eggs with butter and small chunks of orange. No oily, salty unhealthy food of course though given our own eating habits it seems like it’s a matter of time before he learns of the ‘magic’ known as McDs. Haven’t been able to take many pictures of him nor have the time to upload pictures… Life at work is kinda hectic as I’m still adjusting to the routine work as well as preparing for a paper submission.

22 Jan: I'm at the Playground

Back to Work!

January 19, 2011

This is my 2nd week at work and I’m down with the flu! Not sure if it’s the bad airline house air, lack of sleep, stress or sicky germs from baby Calvin. Most likely all of the above. I had a sudden breakout of pimples all over my face as well. Something I haven’t seen for like a decade…

So far, I quite like the work that I’m doing. Chewing through data and spreading some excel magic always puts me in a good mood. Work days are really hectic though. Here’s a typical weekday schedule — which starts at *gasp* 5:45am. Also something I haven’t done since …. hmm…. never. Don’t think I’ve ever woken up at such an ungodly hour before this. I mean gee, there aren’t even any TV at this time back in the days before cable.

  • 5:45 – 6:45 am:  Wake up, express milk, eat breakfast, pack Calvin’s ‘lunchbox’ i.e his milk and solids
  • 6:45 – 7am:         Wash up the pump, pack my own bag
  • 7am – 7:30am:   Wake up hubby. Take care of Calvin while hubby gets ready for work.
  • 7:30am – 7:45am: Go downstairs, feed Calvin some breakfast, pack my cooler bag and leave. Hubby eats breakfast. Then we leave the house.
  • 7:45am – 8am: Drop Calvin off at daycare. Go take TM bus
  • 8am – 5:30pm: Work. In between, grab a quick lunch and run up do my motherly duties (i.e express milk)
  • 5:30pm – 6:30pm: On my way to pick up Calvin!
  • 6:40pm – 7:30pm: Quickly express with the manual pump to relieve engorgement, have dinner, feed Calvin
  • 7:30pm – 8:30pm: Go for a walk and play time with baby!
  • 8:30pm – 11pm:     Bathe, prepare Calvin’s lunch and milk for tomorrow, express before sleeping and any random chores.

I’m seriously considering stopping the moo moo business completely so I won’t have to lug my pump and cooler bag to work, I could get more time sleep and play with Calvin. On the other hand, it’s much better now that I’m only expressing mainly 3 times a day; it is more beneficial for him to consume BM; side benefit of saving milk powder money.  I’ll just go with the flow (pardon the pun :0])and see how it goes. I am ready to stop anytime since he is 14 months old now.

2nd Week at Daycare

January 12, 2011

For the whole week, Calvin’s been able to sleep through the night, which is great news!

So far he seems to be fairly happy at daycare though he cries the moment we step into the compound and clings to us like a koala when we pick him up. But that’s probably normal for a baby who is well attached to his parents. When we are out of sight, he seems to get pretty distracted by the other babies. But as expected, day care obviously doesn’t provide as attentive care as I do at home, in part because they do not know his little quirks and also there are other little ones that need their attention.

Sleeping Through the Night

January 4, 2011

For the first time ever, baby Calvin slept through the night – as in from 9pm till 7am, not the 6 hour sleep that are usually considered through the night for babies. I guess this really marks the beginning of his toddlerhood =) So far, he’s done it for two nights and we are keeping our fingers crossed that it will last, even though he woke up a bit earlier today.

Yesterday was his first day at day care. The teacher told us he cried a few times for short periods in the morning but at least he was able to poop and eat well. As expected, he didn’t manage to take his morning nap and only finally KO in the afternoon. We’re both glad to see that he’s relatively happy last night. He was super chatty when I picked him up, as if he was telling me all about his day. In fact, he didn’t even look very excited to see me. He gave me this ‘Oh mama, I didn’t even realize you were gone’ look. Ouch….that one whole year taking care of him and this is what I get? *dramatic sniffle* Heh heh, I’m just glad he seems to be enjoying himself. In fact, this morning, he didn’t fuss at all when the teacher took over and carried him in so he must have had a good enough time there. All’s well at least. I look forward to having our first real date this week while he’s in daycare 😛

A New Start

January 1, 2011

2011 somehow sounds like it’s so far into the future but it’s actually here. I guess mentally I’m still in 2001 or something. The last 10 years seem to have gone by so fast. To think that it was 1/3 of my life lived so far. This new year will see a lot of changes to our little family – I’m going back to work; Calvin is starting day care; Johnny will have some kind of job change most likely.

We went back to Malaysia to visit my parents in Dec. The car ride to and fro was surprisingly fine. Calvin is another one of those kids who sleeps well in the car. Not surprising since we are both super sleepers who conks out quickly in moving vehicles. He slept about 2.5 of the 4 driving hours. When he was awake, he’s not too keen on staying in his car seat though which is understandable for a kid as active as him. Plus his seat gets hot from being sat on for long hours. What’s more, the sun was annoying him greatly. I was just glad that I only had to handle his monkeying for short periods =) Traffic was light as expected since we drove on weekdays both ways. We enjoyed the trip a lot. It’s a relief to have my mom take care of him so we can have a little couple time together. I mean we can actually sit down and eat at the same time!!! The food was good too. My mum knows what I like best after all. At the end of the trip, I could visibly see that my tummy was starting to grow fat….. Oh how I wish my parents stay nearby.

As of last week, Calvin really mastered hands and knees style crawling. To the extent that he prefers that now to commando crawl, except when he gets excited and really want to get somewhere fast! He’s also taken quite a few steps while pushing his wagon and holding on to our hands, but he’s definitely not ready to let go of the support right now. I’m just so proud of my little baby, even if he’s showing great biasness and being all sticky to his daddy. We conclude that he prefers guys to girls (especially aunties who googas him). He’s going through separation anxiety with his dad right now and will complain if I take over and carry him. I guess that’s good coz it’ll be easier for me to drop him at the day care since he’s not as sticky towards me.
